The magazine also has a brief report on the capture of Lousiburg in Canada and of General Amherst leaving Schenectady New York with 10,000 troops headed for Montreal. EustatiusbNaval architecture Compiled by J. Sewell. EUROPEAN MAGAZINE No. 197 Vol. XXXIII For May 1798. Printed for J. Sewell, Cornhill. Approx 5 1/2 x 9", over 100 pages. Good condition for a 201 year old magazine. There is some wear to the page edges and the yellowing you'd expect of its age (see scan). Binding is a thin (hemp?) rope that is still very much intact. The magazine is a wonderful find, full of historical information. The following is by no means a complete list of the subject matter: Letter from President John Adams warning that France has threatened the sovereignty of the United States and warns that action may be taken. There is further British commentary on the situation. A Mr. X feels that Britain will fall to the French and its wealth transferred to the US. There is also a series of letters to Vice-President Thomas Jefferson debating some of his accounts of American history. There is some question into the accounts of white settlers killed by Indians in Virginia. It is noted that Jefferson has made no attempt to answer these inquiries. There are several accounts of the death of British Naval Hero Capt. Hood, his famous last words about being allowed to die at his post are noted. These articles alone make this magazine a museum quality document. Included also are accounts of British Naval operations in the West Indies naming the ships invovled as well as casualty reports. Reports are from the islands of (I have used the modern spellings) Dominica, St. Lucia, Antigua, St. Barts, Martinique, St. Martin, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Montserrat, St. Eustatius and Puerto Rico. There are also naval reports from Canada and Spain. There are accounts of French Generals rude behavior in occupied Vienna, Napoleon is mentioned briefly. Other subject matter includes House of Lords/Commons votes on monies for the Chelsea hospital, military roads in Scotland, militia, cavalry. There is also mention of a proposal to end the SLAVE TRADE. Also featured is a travel piece on Switzerland, poetry, musical notations, memoirs of Sir.
